Deaddiction Counselling

Alcohol and Tobacco use among waste collectors is fairly common in the community. So to address this problem we organized a de-addiction counselling in around the dangers of tobacco and alcohol consumption. The session included real-life stories of recovery, highlighting the dangers of addiction and the impact it has on individuals and communities, and providing information about treatment options and support resources. A de-addiction counseling session aims to help waste collectors better understand addiction and reduce the stigma around seeking help. By providing education and resources, we are encouraging them to take action and seek the help they need to overcome addiction and improve their overall well-being.

Tanveer Panduranga is a waste collector who lives in Ankola, Puralakkibena, North Karnataka with his wife and daughter. He had to drop out of ninth standard to help his father run his scrap shop. He used to walk 7-8 km every day looking for recyclables around the city when he first started working. He often stayed with friends instead of returning home and spent the majority of his time with them. He started drinking alcohol just at this point. When he first began, he would just drink once every day, but as time went on, he began to drink continuously. Due to alcohol use, he experienced two episodes of being sick and was hospitalized. He tried to stop drinking after falling ill, but he soon started again. He has been struggling with addiction to alcohol for several years, which has had a significant impact on his family's financial situation and his relationships. We diagnosed Tanveer at the health camp conducted. Our social worker Mohini got him help from Surabee Integrated Rehabilitation Centres For Addicts in Karwar and organized a counseling session with him and his family. After several counselling session, he finally agreed to go to the rehabilitation centre. He is currently undergoing treatment at the Surabee Integrated Rehabilitation Centre.
